P90x Problem - Pull Up Bar
By: Blake
Many people have purchased the P90x program and when they tried to use it for the first time realized that they lacked an important piece of equipment that is used in the workout routine. A pull up bar isn’t always easy to come by in an ordinary house or a small apartment, but persevere we must! When I got the program I had this particular problem and I came up with a solution that may help others, or it may complicate their lives; you’ll be the judge.
My solution to the P90x pull up bar problem was to make my own and mount it in my garage in front of my tv. I used galvanized steel pipe from Lowes to make the bar and the supports that hold it to the ceiling. The bars that go to the ceiling are attached to a 2×4 that is screwed into a stud in my attic. After I was done assembling and mounting it I had to test it’s strength. I hung on the bar and it held my weight fine, but I only weigh 150 and wanted to make sure that It was not going to fall on my head while I was using it. I got my friend, who is over 6 feet tall and about 230 pounds, to hang on it and the bar still lives. After doing a few pull ups I found that it was a bit rough on the hands and decided to wrap some racquetball handle grip around it. My P90x pull up bar was ready for action! It was cheap, about $20, and is mounted right in front of my P90x tv.
My solution may not be the one some people are looking for, but there is a more practical solution that you may have already heard of. The P90x chin up bar which cost about 50 dollars. This may be the way to go if you live in an apartment or are not able to attach a pull up bar to your ceiling because it hangs in your door frame. Besides if you are willing to spend a few extra bucks it will save the trouble of making and installing your own.

This is a very very nice idea!!! I was thinking about making one but the “welding” part was an obstacle to me. It’s not anymore with the screwing pipe. I was wondering hot to make one for two people, or two for cheap. This IS the solution. Congratulation.

How long were the lag bolts that you used to attached the 2×4 to the joist? I am buliding the same thing and don’t want to get one too long or thick as I do not want to split the wood
